The first of it’s kind, Melbourne Airport Assist celebrated its 1-year anniversary on 15 September 2026.
During the past 12 months the devoted team have proudly assisted more than 45,000 travellers. The program designed in consultation with Get Skilled Access and piloted with Travellers AId back in 2024 became permanent last September and will be expanded from 6 October 2026 to meet a growing need and the planned upgrades to pick up and drop off zones.
The Melbourne Airport Assist service helps travellers navigate between the airport’s car parks, check in areas, baggage halls and passenger pick-up and drop-off zones. Whilst passengers have previously accessed these services post check-in through their airline, there was no support for people kerbside to check in and vice versa. This is where the Melbourne Airport Assist team come in – providing complimentary accessibility services available to travellers with a disability and/or mobility support requirements, 7 days a week and from mid-October from 3am to 1am daily.
We were happy to show the AbiliTV crew around earlier last month where they got a sneak peek at the new pick up and drop off zones at Melbourne Airport. AbiliTV is Australia’s only national television and digital series that is hosted, produced, and crewed entirely by people with disabilities! Watch the full episode and learn more about the upgrades here.
Our team supports people coming and going from Melbourne for various reasons, the good, the bad and the routine. With a 110-year history of connecting people to place and community with compassion and care, we are incredibly proud of the positive impact that this service has made to people’s journeys and are excited to extend this service delivery with longer opening hours from early October. We welcome our new team members and look forward to the opening of Naarm Way on 6 October 2026.
