Companion Service, 2017

The Travellers Aid Companion Service is celebrating its 10th birthday this year. From humble beginnings in 2011, and with the ongoing support of V/Line and the City of Melbourne, this successful program is operated by a team of volunteers who take immense pride in enabling everyday journeys and ensuring the continued independence of people who use our companion service.

The feedback we receive from our clients demonstrates that the impact of this program is huge. It builds capacity in individuals to utilise the public transport system to access vital healthcare, and to be more engaged in their communities by attending social events and Melbourne attractions.  As we again look to opening up, and learning to live in a COVID normal environment, it is natural to feel a little anxious about resuming our pre-COVID activities. Whether you have a mobility challenge or are unsure about using public transport, our trained companion service volunteers are here and looking forward to travelling with you. We’re here to support you for the next decade or more.

‘Our wonderful volunteers have been supporting and empowering our service users to connect, engage, and participate throughout COVID-19. I am proud and honoured to be part of such a dedicated and nimble group of volunteers.’ – Greta McMahon, Operations Officer and Companion service Volunteer  For more information visit here.
