Thank you Destination Melbourne! We’d like to send a big thank you to Destination Melbourne and all who attended the Trivia Night fundraiser hosted for us on Wednesday 25 May 2011. With over 300 people attending the event at CQ, the night was a complete hoot and raised $6,782 (excl. GST) for our work at Travellers Aid Australia. On top of a silent auction, 34 teams battled it out for the title of Trivia Master! While Travellers Aid Australia didn’t come first – that honour was won by Tourism Victoria’s "Team Awesome" – we definitely hit the jackpot with our wonderful and collaborative partnership with Destination Melbourne. We’d also like to thank all the tourism organisations who generously donated fantastic prizes and auction items for the evening. We’re looking forward to the next Destination Melbourne Trivia Night fundraiser in 2012! If you would like to host your own Fundraising event with Travellers Aid Australia, or investigate other partnership options such as payroll giving, contact Tammy Schlitz, Fundraising Manager on fundraising@travellersaid.org.au or visit www.travellersaid.org.au/donate. |

Help us help others today. End of Financial Year donationsAt Travellers Aid Australia, we rely on your assistance to support people in need. People like Mina. Your donation can provide transport tickets to students needing help getting to school to further their education, or to people seeking to escape from the threat of domestic violence. Here’s Mina’s story. "Mina is a young, indigenous woman from Queensland. After falling pregnant, Mina left everything behind to move to Melbourne to be with her boyfriend. Unfortunately when she arrived, Mina discovered that her boyfriend was unemployed and unable to care for her or their child. After living together for a week, Mina’s boyfriend started abusing her. Every fortnight he would drag her to the ATM and take her payments away from her. Finally, he left her on the streets with nothing. Mina was very depressed about her situation. Mina received some assistance from a Housing Agency and stayed there for about five weeks until she was told about Travellers Aid Australia. Making her way down with the little money she had left, Mina presented at our office very distressed. To Mina’s relief, we were able to assist her in obtaining a ticket to fly back to Brisbane the same day. Mina also waited in one of our rest rooms for the remainder of the day as she was still afraid her ex-partner would find her. Later, one of our Customer Support Officers took Mina to SkyBus on a buggy to ensure her safety. Mina’s mother was also contacted and was very grateful for the help we provided for her daughter. She could not wait for her daughter to get back, so she could take care of her." With the end of the financial year nearing, now is the time to donate. As well as helping travellers in need, anything over $2 is tax deductible. There’s also no limit to how much, or how frequently you can assist. Whether through a one off donation or month-by-month. It all helps us help others. Donate now – visit www.travellersaid.org.au/donate |
